Note: There's been several hits to this post due to its link on the Dylan website www.expectingrain.com/. So welcome, Dylan aficiandos. Here's a piece of trivia for you: Norbert Krapf (who will participate in Hoosier Dylan) is mentioned in the Encyclopedia of Bob Dylan. Check the poetry entry. And if by chance you want to attend this event, order tickets now. The past two shows were sold out. (Greenfield is just east of Indianapolis.)
UPDATE 1-10-09:
I attended the show last night and had a great time. It didn't end till after midnight. The performances were a little ragged at times, but gloriously so, in the spirit of the Rolling Thunder revue. With 17 performers shuffled on and off the stage strewn with mics and instruments, it was amazing to me that no one was tripped.
Highlights for me included Stella and Jane's speeded-up delivery of "The Times They Are A-Changing," pointing the lyrics to the upcoming Obama administration. Jennie DeVoe's second set was a delight in that it included three songs late in Dylan's career: "Things Have Changed," "Everything is Broken," and "Last Deal Gone Down."
I had a Dylan ephiphany during Gordan Bonham's rendition of "I Want You." I've always assumed that the line "I want you so bad" was an idiomatic expression of sexual longing, but it occurred to me that it could be a desire for a woman to be bad (as in naughty).
Also, I was struck how the opening chords of "If Not For You" sounded like the refrain of Lou Reed's "Sweet Jane." Now, I have to go back and listen to both recorded versions.
Query: From what Dylan song did Krapf take the title of his poetry collection "The Country I Come From"?
ReplyDeleteAnswer to Anonymous 10:07 PM. "With God on Our Side."
ReplyDeleteWent to this show in Danville, IN in late Nov 08. Awesome!! Seems the performers had as good of a time as the audience. Very heartfelt renditions, and excellent musicianship. Show lasted past 11:00 pm. Definitely a must-see for any Bobcats.
