UPDATE: Lincoln poetry contest, $150 first prize

Think about it. It was either 30 $5 bills or 15,000 pennies. Brick Street Poetry Inc. thought the winner of the Lincoln poetry contest would prefer the bills.

To commemorate Lincoln's whistletop speech in Zionsville 150 years ago, Brick Street is conducting a contest. Write a poem to or about Lincoln and send it to lincoln@brickstreetpoetry.org by Feb. 7. Poems must be sent as Microsoft Word attachments in 10 point Times New Roman and fit on one page. No entry fee.

Selected poets will read their poems (or designate someone else to read their poems) in ceremonies at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 12, at Lincoln Park in Zionsville.

UPDATE: Because of the inclement weather, John Sherman's reading has been postponed to Oct.

News release from Brick Street Poetry:

Poetry on Brick Street will present John Sherman as the featured poet and speaker at 6:30 pm Thursday February 3rd , 2011 in the cellar room at G. Simone’s CafĂ© (112C South Main Street in downtown Zionsville, Indiana).

John Sherman is the author of nine books. His articles, poems, and photographs have appeared in numerous magazines, newspapers, and anthologies. He has served as a magazine editor, feature writer, and humor columnist. Large-format posters of his poetry and photos have recently been exhibited in Eagle Creek Coffee Company in Zionsville and at the Indianapolis Artsgarden.

He wrote the libretto for the opera, “Biafra,” based, in part, on his experiences working on an International Committee of the Red Cross food/medical team during the Nigerian Civil War (and described in his book, War Stories: A Memoir of Nigeria and Biafra), as a result of receiving a Creative Renewal Arts Fellowship from the Arts Council of Indianapolis.

John has received three Individual Artist Grants from the Indiana Arts Commission; the New Mexico Governor’s Award of Honor for Historic Preservation for his book, Santa Fe: A Pictorial History; and a Finalist position in the Walt Whitman Award competition of the Academy of American Poets for the manuscript of Marjorie Main: Rural Documentary Poetry. His poem, “A Bowl of Possible Peas,” has been selected to be permanently installed along the Indianapolis Cultural Trail.

He obtained a B.A. in English and Journalism from Indiana University and did graduate work in African Studies (with a concentration in African Literature) at the University of Ghana.

He is a member of the Authors Guild, ASCAP, and PEN American Center and a former member of the Bloomington Free Verse Poets.
He founded Sherman & Co. Public Relations in Indianapolis in 1991.

More information on his books and the opera, including a video of the 20-minute performance of “Biafra” in the Artsgarden (a portion of Act Two), scored and conducted by Nathaniel Blume, is available at www.mesaverdepress.com.

Max Ehrmann's "Desiderata"

Max Ehrmann's homespun advice in "Desiderata" is easy to parody. I know, because I've done it. But sometimes we jaded writers forget what a poem can mean to a person. Here is blog entry written by an immigrant who makes it a point to listen to the poem when she wakes up and before she goes to sleep.
